报告内容:This presentation covers some technologies developed at Scion which measure wood properties and timber quality.
报告人简介:
Dr Grant Emms received his PhD in Physics and Mathematics from Auckland University in 2001. The subject of his PhD was Active Noise Control. Since then he has worked for Scion (the trading name of the New Zealand Forest Research Institute). Now he is the Research Leader of the Wood Processing Group at Scion. His current main areas of research are Building Acoustics in timber buildings, and non-destructive testing for timber quality assessment.
Dr. Emms has worked on research projects with engineering and forestry companies in New Zealand, Australia, and the USA. In conjunction with a New Zealand Engineering company, he developed a system for acoustic grading green structural lumber in 2004.This system has been sold to many large-capacity sawmills in New Zealand, Australia, USA and Canada.
In the areas of non-destructive testing of timber Dr. Emms has looked at using acoustic waves, microwaves and x-rays to examine the properties of timber.
Currently Dr. Emms is working on a project which combines ultrasonics, x-ray, NIR and light transmission to automatically measure the structural properties of the wood in tree stems. This is part of a programme whose aim to radical improve the knowledge of Pinus radiata tree growth properties of different genotypes and under different silvicultural regimes.
Since working at Scion, Dr. Emms has published over 30 papers in journals and conference proceedings in the areas of building acoustics and non-destructive testing in timber.
